Back pitch. Fourteen slates have slipped. The nails have rusted through, which is what goes first on a hundred-year-old Glasgow roof.
Back dormer. The lead round the dormer has split along its cheek. That's the damp patch in the box room.
Chimney head. The pointing has gone, and the flaunching round the eight cans is cracked, so rain runs down inside the stack.
Front gutter. There's a fern growing in it. It overflows in heavy rain and soaks the sandstone below.

Slipped and broken slates refixed with copper tingles or nails, loose ridges bedded again, small patches stripped and relaid.

A cottage or bungalow stripped to the sarking, the good slates reused and made up with new, new lead throughout. Tenement roofs are quoted for the whole close and split between the owners.

Euan, up on most of the jobs
Euan does the roofs. Craig does the looking.
We're brothers from Shawlands. Euan served his time as a slater on the Southside and has been on Glasgow roofs since 2003. Craig does every survey himself, flies the drone and writes every quote.
There are six of us, all on our own books, and we don't subcontract roofs. Most of what we mend is a hundred years old: Scotch slate nailed to sarking boards, cast-iron gutters, and lead that has seen a hundred winters.

Usually within the week. Craig photographs every pitch from the drone, or from the ladder where a drone can't go. You don't need to be in if we can get to the roof.

Within three working days: the photographs, and every line of the job with its price. The scaffolding is in it, and there's no deposit for repairs.

If we find anything else once the slates are off, we photograph it and ring you before we touch it.
